Leaving a world of sweet potatoes and Sweden behind, Elisabeth Lam is the new charismatic addition to the CareerLounge team.
Just like IKEA, the three-point seatbelt and our talented Head of Design, Elisabeth Lam is another great Swedish export and the newest addition to our Sales and Partnerships team. After spending the last few months on a sweet potato farm in Queensland to satisfy her visa requirements, Elisabeth is now firmly settled into the Melbourne way of life. We spoke to her about globetrotting experiences and what the future holds for her at CareerLounge.
1. What brought you to CareerLounge?
I came to CareerLounge because I find this job meaningful. It’s a way for me to empower young people so they can make a positive impact on society and develop their leadership potential through personal and professional experiences.
2. What makes you laugh the most?
My sisters can always make me burst into laughter. I miss them.
3. We hear you got rather close with sweet potatoes lately. What’s your favourite thing about them?
When you have worked on Queensland biggest and toughest sweet potato farm for 12-13 hrs per day, 6-7 days a week, for 3 months straight, you do not want to see or get near another sweet potato again in your life.
4. Tell us about a situation that you now look back on and say “what was I thinking”?!
What was I thinking when I decided to take the cheapest way to go to a youth leadership conference in Cluj-Napoca, Romania from Budapest, Bulgaria few years ago. We met the taxi man outside the airport in the middle of the night. He was driving a mini van with a trailer attached to it. He could only say a few english words and kept talking to us in Bulgarian. I must admit he looked a bit awkward as well, I should have turned around at that moment. Anyway, he threw our luggages into the trailer and the belts inside the van did not work. The drivers are crazy and ruthless in Eastern Europe. It was so dark outside and with such few street lights. The taxi man must have been driving over 180mph on the high way. He was constantly swearing so loud and could make sudden turns every time he almost missed an exit. You could feel the trailer with our clothes was flying in the back. But what did it matter, this would be the end of me and no one would even know where I am.
5. What would you sing at Karaoke night?
“I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. With this song, in one minute I can use my whole register by mixing both head and chest voice. Every person who gets to know me knows I love to sing and perform.
6. What are your pet hates?
If I am in a public building and need to share one or two toilets and someone leaves the toilet so disgusting that you can’t even step inside. So I need to hold it in the whole day until I get home.
7. Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Angelina Jolie. She is gorgeous, a humanitarian and FEARLESS.
8. What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend?
My childhood friend and I love to escape the cold in Sweden and suntan on the balcony in southern Spain or spend the weekend at cafes in Paris eating our favourite desserts now and then. Paris is always a good idea.
9. What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten?
The most unusual thing I’ve ever eaten was duck head and bill when I lived in China. I remembered the whole head, even the eyes were covered with something that was dark brown. It was hard, flat and tasteless.
10. What three things do you think of the most each day?
I wish my family and friends were here in Australia with me, what my next next step is each day and how truly thankful I am because I love life so much.
Hopefully this has given you a glimpse of Elisabeth’s bubbly, adventurous and hilarious character, even through a computer screen. If you want to find out more about Elisabeth you can connect with her here. Otherwise you’ll find her around the karaoke bars of Melbourne – just listen out for the tunes of Whitney Houston.
